Gotye

Melbourne, Australia

A huge hit down under, this track (featuring Kimbra, another up and coming artist to watch) meanders with a pretty vocal but then explodes with the main refrain along with a xylophone accompaniment that I couldn’t get out of my head.

I was fortunate enough to see Wye Oak play at SXSW this year in a Merge showcase with Wild Flag. Now everybody gets to see how Thom Yorke dances, although I hear that this was actually choreographed (which is a little hard to believe). At one point, this video became such a sensation that it earned its own meme. In any case, Yorke’s vocal skills in the upper register shine on this lovely and spare track.

Berlin’s Sascha Ring has a stunner of a song here which has an emotional cinematic build-up in a shoegaze epic. See also Ash/Black Veil.

Honey Bunny

Girls

San Francisco, CA

I could have chosen a few tracks from the critically lauded LP from San Francisco’s Girls, but I’m choosing this sunny upbeat track that has a bit of vintage surfer rock in it. I also loved the diflucan order much more somber but beautiful track Vomit.

Banana Ripple

Junior Boys

Hamilton, ON (Canada)

I can’t resist the trademark mix of synth beats and boops that Canadian duo Junior Boys brings to the table. This epic nine minute track was the closer on their latest LP, building on a well-crafted synth-filled melody to a second half that features falsetto vocals that makes you forget that it’s been going on for nine minutes.

On to the top 20.
