Torches
Pumped Up Kicks
Foster the People
Los Angeles, CA
If there’s a band that went from zero to huge this year, it was Foster The People. I saw these guys play in a bar’s backyard at SXSW and now they’re playing in front of thousands. They did it by creating incredibly catchy, high-enery danceable music, and no more so than in this huge hit. Never mind that the song is about a disturbed kid with a gun, you still want to get up and buy glucophage pills dance. See also Helena Beat and Houdini.

Destroyer

I must love everything Dan Bejar does, and there are always a couple tracks on every Destroyer release that are standouts for me. Bejar somehow combines 70’s soft rock (complete with horns & saxophones) with modern synth and it just works. Chinatown is another wonderful track.
